I must agree with Jamal Aslam. The kuladevta is the patron deity of a particular Hindu family lineage/clan/dynasity.

regarding kuladevta.... friends what all you have posted is correct but if you don t mind you can add this also ... henceforth kuladevta of a family comes when some ancestor of that family had the vission and the blessings of the god and was given the boon of patronaging his family... it is a good tradition and being a hindu every body should atleast know two things... firstly his gotra and secondly his kuldevta....

It is obvious from the term itself that kuladevata is a deity worshipped in a family. But when we talk of family in this sense, obviously it is not a nuclear family. And this very fact involves a deeper truth woven around a kuladevata. The belief in having a family deity is instrumental in uniting all the members of the family. It is a common practice that once in a year all the members join together to worship the deity. With the shrinking of the family size this practice is becoming extinct more disturbingly in modern Indian families. Their children might have even forgotten the names of their kuladevata. As a result, they would have lost the spirit of family also. In almost all tribal communities, this practice is restored and thereby all the members are quite sensitive to their family relations. This is not to suggest that kuladevata is the only factor responsible for such sensitivity, but avowedly it is one of the significant factors.

Every Hindu family has its own family deity. The word Kul means family or clan and Devata means deity. Hindu families make a pilgrimage to the Kuldevata temple to obtain blessing of the deity after an auspious occasion such as a wedding. In Maharashtra, the Kuldevatas are mainly manifestations of Siva or Shakti such as Khandoba or Bhavani respectively. Balaji of Tirupati is another well known Kuldevta. Surprisingly, Vishnu or his incarnations are only rarely worshipped as the Kuldevta. We are chosen to be born in families based on our karmic calculation, each family has some kuldevatas. They are the real protectors of the family, and are constantly battling subtle negative forces to protect the family tree.In other word s they are the flagship of the family in the spiritual world. If they are not shown respect or not worshipped ,bad incidents can happen to a family. No prayer reaches the Supreme Lord without first offering prayers/ obeisience to the Kuldevatas . They are like the gateways to Almighty Lord, always revere them and respect them. One of first pre-requisite of performing your duty is to never forget to remember your kuladevata before starting any work.

Mr. Rajendra u r 100% correct . it is essentrial now a days , so many devotees chasing behind maharajas & tantrics, but they havnt any returns due to blind faith and difficulties. If they worship their kuldevatas, they will achieve their objectives. so we must know our self first. Our forefathers given clearcut guidance about kuldevs, gotras. So many families supposing their gramdevtas as kuldevtas but its no correct . i m agree with u.
