SUNIL GANGOPADHYA - An irreparable vacuum came about with the passing away of the legendary figure in the Bengali literature Sunil Gongopadhya. In the post-Tagorian phase the trio i.e Sunil Gongopadhya Samaresh Bose and Sakti Chattopadhya brought about a great cradle especially in the mid sixties. The Calcutta Coffee House used to be manned with men of letters and these three in a body would remain the nucleus. Sunil had ever caught the spirit of the time and juxtaposed it with history. His two contemporary works Pratidwandi that speaks large on the political turmoil and its reflections on the youth of the time as well as Shei Samay dealing with the quintessence of the Bengali Renaissance. Sunil had ever been fascinated by the past not of course for past s sake but to fuse it with the present. His Moner Manush can be branded as the Swan Song. It deeply deals with the secular ethos of a ballad singer Lalan Fakir. The essence of the work is very much time-tested. He was trying his hand with the greatest epic the Mahabharata. But it remains a sealed book as the icy hand laid to make his hand static for ever.
