The Ajanta Caves are about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE. The caves include sculptures and paintings. Their beauty and antiquity distinguish them as one of the treasures of India and indeed the world art.

The Ajanta Caves are undoubtedly one of the expensive treasures of India. The Mural paintings featured on these caves are marvelous. They speak in volume about the talents of our painters. The Archaeological Survey of India has described these caves as the `finest surviving examples of Indian art particularly painting`.

The Ajanta caves were used for living, education and worship. They were made in two distinct periods. The walls of the caves feature figures of the Buddha and depictions of the Jataka tales.
