The celebrated painter Jamini Roy was known for using cheap indigenous pigments so that his art could reach the people of all sections of society, including rich and poor. Jamini Roy had realized that he must focus on the intrinsic culture of our country rather following western influences. So he took inspirations from village and folk life.

Jamini Roy has started his career by painting in post-impressionist genre of landscapes and portraits. He was honored with Padma Bhushan in 1955 and died in Kolkata in 1972. His works in the Bengali folk painting marked a new beginning in the history of modern art.
