India has a little Greece which is another name for Malana situated in Kullu valley. A strange fact is that the people of this place believe that they are the descendants of Alexander-the-Great.

The people of this place also speak their own language which is understood only by themselves. Their dialect is called Kanashi.

Yes, there are many myths about this village. The one about descendants of Alexander`s soldiers arising from the Two House administration system practiced in the village since ancient times which resemble the Greek system of governance. There is also a belief that the Malanese are descendants of Rishi Jamadagni, an ancient sage of India who settled in that village. But in recent times, Malana has gained popularity for the plant from which very superior quality of hashis is produced worldwide known as Malana Cream. Several years ago, I had gone to Manikaran and then trekked further up the Parvati valley. That was the time of the Hippies and soon after crossing Manikaran I saw several foreigners all young people in rented village houses enjoying chillum. I had heard about Manikaran being a centre for these stuffs but later learnt about Malana`s reputation also.

Yes Ashok, Malana is a notable place in the state. Although it is an isolated place from the rest of the world, but it gained prominence for its rich history and culture. Several documentaries have been made on this ancient village.
