Palanquins began to fall out of use after rickshaws were introduced in the 1930s. But in some places it is still in use. I have seen people hiring palanquins to visit the Amarnath Temple in Kashmir. The temples which are located at the top of any hill, palanquins can be hired to carry the customer up on the steep hills.
