India is ranked as world`s 2nd largest English speaking country. Looking at the progress of our nation in this field, what are your views? Is it a development of the communication system or a threat to the vernacular languages, as our nation is multilingual?

Reportedly only 10 percent of the population in India speaks English and that makes India the second largest English speaking country. Predominantly speaking in English is regarded as the first sign of any `well educated` person. In India the official language in most places is also English which again puts some stress on the necessity of learning the language. Whether this will contribute to the extinction of some vernacular languages or not is a question, but the growing importance of this foreign language have certainly diminished the significance of many Indian languages.
