The history of terracotta dates back to the Harappa and Mohenjodaro civilizations in India. Many terracotta figurines have been unearthed that have elaborate depictions of artistic jewelry. Archaeologists have also found a variety of ornaments such as earrings, ear studs, necklaces, pendants and bracelets. Designs for these ornaments were inspired by nature and portray, animals, leaves and flowers. The terracotta industry was developed to its fullest in West Bengal and the art of making terracotta jewellery became famous in cities of Tamil Nadu such as Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore.
