Indian Brides decorate themselves with gold and diamond jewellery, apply Mehendi to colour hands and feet and undergo various bridal rituals including wearing bridal lehenga or saree. What are the other traditional attires of Indian brides in other communities?

The traditional Punjabi bridal wear is Shalwar and Kameez along with a heavily embroidered Dupatta which would cover the head. The outfit is usually of Patiala style. This was originally the attire of the royal families of Punjab. The Patiala Shalwar has many pleats that gather towards the waistline and drape below gracefully. The Kameez is a knee length fitted top. Usually the outfit is in hues of Red with a lot of embellishments intricately embroidered with unique motifs and sequence.

I have heard about a saree named Mekhla. This is from Assam. Is this the saree worn by the Assamese brides?

The traditional dress worn by the Assamese bride is called Mekhla. Mekhla is generally created on Muga silk and is adorned with gold and silver threads. Muga custom is specific to the state of Assam and a vital part of the tradition and culture of the state. This fabric serves as a good base fabric for Mekhla Chadar. Mekhla is a very interesting ensemble which appears like a sari. Though originally a sari is a single piece of cloth Mekhla comprises of two or three pieces of clothing. The first part of the Mekhla is worn as a skirt and the other half like an Aanchal of the sari. The fabric of the skirt part is heavy in texture and is ornamented with a broad border and embroidery. In contrast the fabric on the Aanchal part is light-weight and flowing. Mekhlas are designed in a myriad of colors like green, blue, yellow and red.

It is the most special day for the bride/groom ... as the Indian traditional weddings have their own essence and significance. Thanks for Sharing All the above information. But choosing the best outfit is also a big problem. It is always been so that Indian Bride/Groom wear very traditional and heavy clothes during their weddings.. often it happens so that they are unable to handle it and it becomes very stressful for them.

I have many Nepali friends. The Nepali brides wear red saris instead of red lehengas which are embroidered with gold thread and dotted with sequins. Green borders are also traditional and add a pop of colour. During the ceremony, brides also wear their chuuni over their faces veiling themselves. It may be lifted by a high top bun adorned with jewellery or an embroidered pill-box like cap. Often the bride is given a large powdery tika during the ceremony. They also tie a red dori around their top buns.
