Akshay Tritiya is one of the prominent festivals of Hindus and Jains celebrated in the Vaishakha month of the Hindu calendar. Considered an auspicious day to buy assets such as gold and silver, the day is regarded lucky and is believed to bring good fortune and success by worshipping Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. Can anyone further enlighten me on legend behind bringing good fortune Akshay Tritiya and how else is it celebrated among Hindus and Jains?

Akshay Tritiya is a one day event celebrated in late April or early May. Hindus celebrate this day because according to them Akshay Tritiya is the day when the great God of Wisdom, Lord Ganesha started writing the epic work called `Mahabharata`. It is believed that when the Pandavas were in exile the Lord presented them a bowl which was named Akshay Tritiya. That bowl was never empty and produces an unlimited amount of food on demand.

Sorry Nisha, no indian scripture states that one must buy gold, silver or assets on Akshay Tritiya day. It is the Gold & Silver traders who came out with this propaganda to lure the innocent Hindus to purchase their expensive metals. If you do have any doubts as to what I have said please check with genuine Hindu Religious Pandits.

Thank you Maniam PS for the reply. It is not said that buying gold or silver is a ritual but it is considered auspicious. So that`s a perception which is not mandatory for all. People who believe in these things do it and nobody is insisted to follow such things.

During Akshay Tritiya the people of Bengal celebrate `Halkhata`. It is a celebration of starting a new business and worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi.
