What I have read is that nowhere in the Vedas or any holy book it is written that one should buy gold or gold ornaments on Akshaya Tritiya. Further there was no such practice in the olden days. Actually this practice is brought about by the present Goldsmiths and jewellers to trick the general public in buying gold ornaments. It is said that on Akshaya Tritiya one should purchase salt and put it in the alter in order to rid all the negative energy from the home.

Akshaya Tritiya is an important day in the Hindu calendar. Its auspiciousness arises from the belief that one year in the life of humans is equivalent to a day in the lives of celestial beings. So the month Vaishakh is considered the morning of a celestial being`s day.
