Today the concept of wearing a Mangalsutra has changed considerably. It is more of a fashion statement than a symbol of marriage. With the progressive times, the wearing of Mangalsutra in working women has considerably reduced. Can anybody please share the importance or the value of wearing a Mangalsutra?

The significance of mangal sutra has changed with time but hardly any woman is concerned about the religious belief and sacred power it holds. According to ancient traditions a mangal sutra or ?sacred thread? is worn by married women for the long life of their husband. These mangal sutras come in different designs and each design holds certain significance for different religions.

Mangalsutra carries immense importance in Hindu weddings as well as in the lives of Hindu married women. A mangalsutra is tied around the neck of the bride by the groom during the wedding rituals. It is a symbol of marriage and is worn by the bride until her husband`s death.

A Hindu married woman is supposed to wear a lot of ornaments to symbolise that she is married. Earrings, toe rings, bangles, mangalsutra, etc. are some of the ornaments which have to be worn by every Hindu married woman. Of all these the Mangalsutra is the most essential ornament which is to be worn compulsorily and women are not supposed to take it off under any circumstance.

Each black bead in the mangalsutra is believed to have divine powers that protect the married couple from the evil eye and is believed to safeguard the life of the husband.

It is a sacred necklace that the groom ties around the bride`s neck on the day of the wedding in a ceremony called `Mangalya Dharanam` which means wearing the auspicious thereby giving her the status of his wife and life mate.
