Melattur is a quiet village in Kerala, a relevant state when it comes to folk dance dramas. It is only in the summer when the village wraps itself in the splendour and echo of an age-old temple dance-drama tradition called the Bhagavata Mela which takes place during Narasimha Jayanthi. The village recently celebrated this art form. Can anyone tell me more on the origin of this art form and what are such other folk arts prevalent in the village of Melattur?

Melattur is a town and not at all a small village. The Bhagvata Mela as mentioned takes place in Melattur but in Tamil Nadu and not in Kerala. There are towns named Melattur both in Tamil Nadu as well as in Kerala.

The great Bhagavata Mela tradition is the only surviving link today in Tamil Nadu that connects us with the ancient Sanskrit theatre.
