When we hear of Ladakh we only think about the picturesque hills and mountains along with the ever striking and elegant monasteries and gompas it has to offer. Not many know about `Losar` which is considered as the most important socio-religious event. Does anyone know more information about Losar and its celebration there?

Losar is the Tibetan word for new year. Lo holds the semantic field year age, Sar holds the semantic field new fresh. Losar is an important holiday in Tibet Bhutan and for certain ethnic groups in Nepal and India. Losar is celebrated for 15 days with the main celebrations on the first three days.

Losar celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir in the Ladakh district can be regarded as the most elaborate and convoluted of the different social and religious events and festivals of Ladakh. The rites and the rituals that are followed during the Losar is an interesting amalgamation of the Buddhist and the pre Buddhist Bon religious practices. People wear new clothes and adorn themselves in new jewelry to enhance the festive mood in the air.
