Mandana is the traditional painting seen on the walls and floors of rural houses in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Its basic facet being white colour on red background, Mandana has a striking appeal of its own but is seen disappearing due to emergence of more concrete houses in the rural areas. Does anyone know more about Mandana art and its origin? Are there any artists still practising it in Rajasthan or MP?

They have been practiced for centuries by women of the Meena community as decorations for special or festive occasions. The motifs of these paintings are inspired by beliefs that pertain to auspiciousness and good omens.

This folk art is done with the use of red sand and chalk powder and is applied on floors and walls especially on auspicious occasions and festivals.
