Animals have been traditionally considered sacred in Hindu culture. The symbolic significance of animals in India is as vehicles of god or deities themselves. I am developing an article related to this topic and I need suggestions from all my friends of Indianetzone Forum.

My understanding is that only cows are sacred and it`s also called as `Komatha`. I believe that the reason for the cow to be blessed sacred is due to it`s service to the family as a `beast of burden`. In those days without one milking cow in the family, the family cannot survive as it provides nutritious milk for the infants and all other dairy products for the adults.

Hey Stuti, can you please share some mythological stories of believes related to elephant?..

Lord Ganesha is the elephant-headed God. He is worshipped first. His Names are repeated first before any auspicious work is begun before beginning any kind of worship. He is the Lord of power and wisdom. He is the eldest son of Lord Shiva and the elder brother of Kartikeya. He is the energy of Lord Shiva and so He is called the son of Shankara and Uma. By worshiping Lord Ganesha mothers hope to earn for their sons the sterling virtues of Ganesha.
