in some part of the sub-continent the nose rings are traditionally indispensable. Hence during and after marriages these small pieces of jewelleries are essentially worn. Nose rings in India are available in both gold and silver. With passing time, however, new metals have evolved, such as, white gold and others. With the advent of the fashion jewelleries the women had a wide variety of designs to choose from.

Wearing nose rings is an ancient practice with a 4,000-year history. People have worn nose rings to adorn themselves, to participate in religious rituals and to symbolize wedded bliss. , Muslim invaders brought the practice of wearing nose rings and nose piercings to India. The ancient Indian medicinal system, Ayurveda says that the left nostril is the preferred position for the piercing as Ayurvedic medicine associates this location with the female reproductive organs.

Nose rings are not only used during the wedding but also in other different occasions. And it is varied from people to people. Just like in Maharashtra they used a certain type of nose ring called nath made of pearl and beads. In rajasthan also women wear different nose rings. But nowa days its a fashion among the girls. So how do we classify Nose ring as only a wedding jewelery?

Hi all, i completely agree with Deeptimoyee that we cannot categorize nose ring as just a wedding jewelery. But i certainly like to add here that during marriage or wedding ceremonies Nose ring as a jewelry plays an important role. It is widely believed and thought that the nose is exclusively for sensual smell and breathing only. But in a well established practices, this theory manipulates, that it connects with emotional, sexual and romantic propositions too That s what the decorative ornaments and jewels to the Nose apparently causes - not only beautifying, but also significantly adds value to the marital life as well

Ya Anjana, I appreciate your thought. I want to know what is the positive and negative thoughts come to mind when we saw a woman wearing Nose Ring. When we saw a women wearing Nose ring from Rural areas, we consider her as a dehati. But the same in case of a Urban woman, it s a style statement. Why such a double standard?

Hi deeptimoyee....Well in urban areas wearing nose ring is indeed a style statement. The reason i believe is the way the urban female carries herself. The urban lady when nicely dressed, carries herself to the core and o yes that piece of nose ring then is sure to add that extra glamour whilst redefining her beauty and adding further charm of sheer femininity.. On the contrary when a typical village girl wears a nose ring she fails to carry the way the urban lady carries herself. Perhaps this is the reason why we nose ring is a style statement in the urban areas. However here i also like to add that the nosepin worn at the nostrils or the noserings worn at the septum by that innocent village lass complements well with the innocence of the village set up whilst bring out her striking feminine aura in the most delicate way. The Rajasthani rural women wear kundan nose rings and trust me they look awesome .. and even this fashion is hugely copied by the so called urban women.

Hi there ........I do not think that we use the term dehati in a generous sense. The term is quite derogatory for the so called civilized society. Nose rings used in rural India have exquisite ornamental style, with elaborate designs. Those kind of nose rings are not used by urban people because the dress worn in cities shall prove to be a mismatch with the elaborate nose rings of villages. However, the rural nose rings are used with gaudy rural dresses that village girls carry quite well.......those kind of nose rings have become like a costume for the rural people in India.
