I have heard that Vrindavan is a famous place for celebrating Holi in North India. There are different forms in which the festival is being celebrated. Can anyone highlight me on this? Also I would love to know about other places in India famous for celebrating the festival of colours.

Vrindavan is the land of Krishna`s `Raas Leela` with the Gopis. Here the Holi celebrations start at least a week before the actual festival.

Enlighten me on this Holy Festival. Is this festival celebrated throughout India or only at specific Indian states? Is this a communal celebration or does it have any religious significance? If it is a religious celebration, who is the reigning deity? Sorry to say that we Hindus in Malaysia do not celebrate Holi and as such quite ignorant about the festival.

There are many places across India known for its unique Holi celebrations but the Holi celebrations in Mathura and Vrindavan are special. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born in Mathura and he spent his childhood in Vrindavan.

Poonam, do you mean to say that the Holi festival is celebrated to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna? Please be more specific.

No, the birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated as Janmashtami in India. Holi celebration comes from the legend of Krishna and Radha. The supreme deity fell in love with the goddess Radha. but was concerned about differences in their skin colour his being blue. His mother advised him to playfully paint her face to overcome their differences. Lovers today continue the tradition by making sure their own faces match when the gulal begins to be thrown.
