Onam is the biggest and most important festival of the year in Kerala. It`s a 10 day harvest festival that also marks the start of the New Year on the Malayalam calendar. It`s a festival rich in culture and heritage.

Hey Minakshi, can you please tell us how is the Onam Festival celebrated in Kerala?..

Since it is a 10 days celebration, so today I will start with the Day 1 celebration. Atham, the first day of Onam celebration starts with people visiting the temples in the morning. It is believed that King Mahabali starts his preparations to descend from Pathala to Kerala on this day. A grand procession starts off at Thrippunithura near Kochi, the place where Mahabali is believed to have been banished from earth. The traditional ritual of laying Pookalam starts on Atham day. The size of Pookalam on this day is small in size and the size increases with each passing day of the festival. Only yellow flowers will be used on this day and the design will be simple.

Pookalam is one of the best and important highlights of the Onam festival. Basically a Pookalam is an artwork or a variant of rangoli where the designs are made out of flowers.
