Well, presently it is a festival where a sister ties a thread on her brother`s wrist to signify a bond of safety, but the origin of this festival is controversial. While some believes that it has several mythical origins, modern concept considers it to be an initiative by Rabindranath Tagore to unify mankind irrespective of caste and religion. Can someone explain me in details?

The festival of Raksha Bandhan by Rabindranath Tagore was observed in a unique manner to mark a symbolic protest against the British during the partition of Bengal. The festival is thus celebrated in both ways to celebrate the bond with our brothers and sisters who also inhabit in the other part of the Bengal.

Can anybody please tell me how is Raksha Bandhan celebrated? Though I belong to a different religion, I would like to know about the rituals. This year I am planning to go to my brother?`s place at Mangalore and give him a surprise by celebrating Raksha Bandhan with him. Please suggest.

On the day of Raksha Bandhan, the sister ties Rakhi on the wrist of her brother and both make prayer to God for the well being of each other. Sisters perform Aarti and put Tilak on the forehead of her brother. In return brothers make promise to take care of his sister under all circumstances. Usually brothers gift something to the sister to mark the occasion.
