Skipping breakfast often leads to poor concentration, irritability, low blood sugar levels and a high craving for food in midmorning or lunch. This results in overeating and weight gain. In fact it would be easier to control your weight by eating smaller meals and healthy snacks more frequently than skipping any meal. In India, there are variety of breakfast items available which are nutritious and provide the required amount of energy to sustain throughout the day. Breakfast foods differ from region to region. Idli and dosa made from rice and pulse, it gives good amount of energy and proteins and if had with Vegetable sambar, it contributes to vitamins and minerals. Upma there are varieties of upma prepared, most of them with semolina which is energy rich. However Upma prepared with broken wheat and vegetables is very nutritious because of its fiber content. Sandwiches prepared with vegetables/shredded chicken and brown bread is a complete breakfast food containing all the vital nutrients and of course fibre. For those people who are looking to lose weight, cheese or mayonnaise should be avoided. Bread omlet is a high protein breakfast food and very much recommended especially for children, atheletes and those who are looking to build muscles. However people with cholesterol or any heart problems should prepare the omlet only with egg white Oats with milk and fruits Oats is gaining lots of popularity these days owing to its high content of soluble fibre and its benefit in reducing cholesterol in the body. So oats with skimmed milk and fresh fruits are a very good option especially for those who are on a weight reduction diet. Stuffed parathas if prepared with less oil, parathas are very nutritious and an ideal breakfast item. The stuffing can be anything ranging from potatoes, raddish, cauliflower, sprouted green gram moong , paneer prepared from skimmed milk and so on.

According to Ayurveda, fasting is not recommended because it irritates pitta, vata, and kapha dosha. Skipping breakfast particularly irritates sadhaka pitta, a subdosha of pitta. Sadhaka pitta is responsible for maintaining an even temper and when in balance, brings joy and contentment. An imbalanced sadhaka pitta can result in irritability and unsettled emotions. Ayurveda says that a good way to break the habit of skipping breakfast is to make and drink fresh fruit or vegetable juices. Rehydrating the body with fresh, natural, and nourishing fluids will help you get a head start on a busy day. Try a juiced blend of fresh carrot, cilantro and zucchini, or fresh sweet grape, apple, or pear juice. Pick ripe sweet fruit. Orange juice is not recommended on an empty stomach because it is too acidic. Sweet juicy fruits are excellent cleansers - they help to eliminate impurities from the body. According to Ayurveda, it is recommended that fruits be eaten first thing in the morning, 30 minutes before other breakfast items such as hot cereal. Other suggestions for breakfast include dried figs and raisins, soaked the night before or simmered with a little water for 30 minutes. Or try one of the following healthy combinations: dates with a small dab of Ghee replacing the pit, chapati flat bread with raw honey and warm milk, or oatmeal with raisins and chopped almonds. Almond Energy mixed with warm milk is another excellent way to start the day. Replace coffee with Raja s Cup for a great tasting anti-oxidant.
Consider a healthy millet breakfast for a good start of the day. Ayurveda also recommends Millet breakfast. ash and drain the millet, place in a small pot and add 1 cup of boiling water. Add a few pinches of spices of your choice, such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, etc. Simmer on medium-low for 15-20 minutes til almost all the water is absorbed. Stir in toppings of your choice, like honey or maple syrup, stewed fruits, apple sauce, sliced bananas, sugar-free jam, some nuts and seeds, a dollop of yogurt, etc. Ho For the individual with VATA DOSHAS millet is too drying for vatas so it s better to use wheat pearls, amaranth or oats instead use fresh or stewed fruits not dried choose toppings like honey, yogurt, nuts and seeds stir in some ghee at the end of cooking For the individual with PITTA DOSHAS millet is too heating for pittas, so better to use wheat pearls, barley or oats choose sweet spices like cinnamon and cardamom sweeten with maple syrup choose almonds or coconut and cook with the grains top with any sweet fruits, fresh or stewed stir in a bit of ghee at the end of cooking KAPHAS choose fresh, dried or stewed fruits like apples, apricots, berries, peaches, raisins or prunes sweeten with a touch of honey choose any spices top with a bit of flax, pumpkin or sunflower seeds no nuts

Breakfast is considered as the most important meal of the day as it gives us the much needed energy after a night s sleep. But we often ignore it as we are in a hurry. The rush hour of the morning, kids going off to school, adults running to work, the sufferer is the breakfast, often skipped, more often underrated. Breakfast should be a healthy, balanced, well rounded meal. If time is the constraint, some amount of preparing can be done in the night, to save on precious minutes in the morning. Cereals are a good idea for those who don t have the time or the energy to cook in the morning. Coupled with skimmed milk or juices, it takes care of energy, cereal goodness and all other nutrients too. In fact many ready to eat cereals are fortified with more vitamin and iron, and hence are more nutritious than any other food. To make sure that you are eating sensibly for breakfast, avoid too much sugar or caffeine preferably not more than one cup of coffee . A whole-wheat toast with eggs or low fat cheese with fresh juice or some other fruit, like a banana, and low fat milk can be a good breakfast. Eggs are an all time good idea for a healthy breakfast, more so if they are boiled or poached, hence less on oil. In India, there are variety of breakfast items available which are nutritious and provide the required amount of energy to sustain throughout the day. Breakfast foods differ from region to region. Some other options are given here- Idli and dosa made from rice and pulse, it gives good amount of energy and proteins and if had with Vegetable sambar, it contributes to vitamins and minerals. Upma there are varieties of upma prepared, most of them with semolina which is energy rich. However Upma prepared with broken wheat and vegetables is very nutritious because of its fiber content. The stuffing can be anything ranging from potatoes, raddish, cauliflower, sprouted green gram moong , paneer prepared from skimmed milk and so on. Corn/Rice/Wheat flakes Corn flakes are very popular breakfast item. Now a days you have variety of them availble in the market which is fortified with calcium/Iron or Vitamins. It is very nutritious when taken with skimmed milk and fresh fruits.

A nutritious breakfast refuels the body and replenishes blood sugar glucose thereby releasing the energy required to start the day. The body and brain are low on fuel after sleep and need recharging after the long fast. It is completely illogical to skip breakfast on the pretext of dieting. Skipping breakfast leads to sudden dip in energy levels and people can be seen making unhealthy choices for filling up later. Many also feel that breakfast makes them sluggish for the rest of the day but it really depends on the type of food we select for breakfast. Sugar-based juices and refined flour foods don t form a healthy breakfast at all.
