What do you think - does regional literature is still given that much weightage as compared to the Indian writings in English??

A strong characteristic of Indian literature is the influence of regional kathas, fables, stories and myths, which later developed as a distinct genre and was termed as the regional literature. Indian literature as the cradle of the art of narration gave birth to an important and independent genre of literature, the regional literature of India. ndia s multilingual panorama for the very first time thus gained a definite articulation amidst regional Indian literature. Diverse culture, varied religion and most importantly the multifariousnesses of Indian language played the major role in contouring the rich literary tradition of India. The synthesis of varied Indian language and the union of diverse Indian traditions from the different parts of India thus offered Indian literature that desired contour whilst making it dynamic to the core.To shape Indian literature and at the same time to understand the land, Indian regional literature has been given adequate importance

Literature in India is in my view being carried forward by young the Indians writing in writers writing in English. That is encouraging . However, the real problem is the English literature is exclusive to a certain group. In the process, our rich tradition is being lost. I feel something must be done to refurbish the importance of vernacular literature..THAT IS THE REGIONAL LITERATURE. There have been great writers in Hindi , Kannada, Oriya, Bengali, and all other languages in India. But, as long as the youth is not taught the value of appreciation, neither will we develop further culturally, nor will we get popular international recognition..

My answer to your question would be a big NO. Regional literature in India, as was envisioned in erstwhile times, precisely after Independence and up till the 1970s, does not hold that sizzling position any more. The sole reason for this can be attributed to the gushing arrival of Indian English writers, both in India and the Indian diaspora. With cosmopolitanism being the key mantra for today s generation of writers and readers, much shallow books with almost no storyline at all to hook a reader, are getting pushed up the ladder of success. On the other hand, regional writers do shell out masterpiece works, blankly going unnoticed under such English publicity stunts.
