n the present times, India has turned out a latent hub of photographic panorama. There is no single sphere where Indians have not laid their hands on. Can we not say that Indian photography is a distinct art form?

With the extensive passage of time, photography in India has ideally established itself as a distinct art form. The humble camera is now the artist s brush in India. The artistic genre is booming because of its affordability and easy availability. n order to propagate photography as a means of artistic expression in India, the Center for Photography as an Art Form was established in Mumbai by the National Center for the Performing Arts, with the help of a grant from the Ford Foundation. Fresh, newcomer artists every day are coming up with innovative ideas. Its certainly not an overstatement that photography is now a distinct art form in india with a class of its own

Photography finds usage in a couple of artistic and aesthetic areas in the Indian context. For example, the wide-ranging employment of videography and cinematography in films and movies that amazes everyone in every shot one perceives. The mechanics by which a video camera pans or narrows down a shot according to the film s needs, is simply breathtaking. The genres of films itself redefines the stylistic variations in cinematography as an art form. At a moment one can be astonished by breathtaking natural and landscape shot, at another time an old architectural shot can stupefy a viewer. Every genre, be it underwater, wildlife, portrait, food or black and white photography, the cinema is perhaps the best mode of expressing picturisation as an art form.

There had been much debate on whether photography can be considered a valid art form. It was argued by eminent photographers that certain forms with combination of lines and colours that evoked aesthetic emotions were art. And this quality was found in photography too. However, today it is indeed considered to be an art form that invokes aesthetic realism. I agree that only an artist can capture the emotions, the beauty of a particular situation, a particular person. Hence be it visual art or paintings, any form that has the prowess to stir aesthetic emotions should be defined as art forms.

According to me Indian photography is both an art and a science. Photography allows us to express our feeling and emotions, but to do so we need to master the scientific part of the medium. Unlike a painter, who is in direct contact with his subject and his canvas, a photographer is separated from his subject by the camera and from his canvas by computers and printers today and by darkroom equipment previously.

Photography was not discovered instantaneously but rather developed as a result of several centuries of scientific and artistic explorations into light, optics, and perception. From the introduction of the Camera as a tool for drawing to the growth of human sciences during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, photographic innovations and instruments came together to forever change the ways in which we viewed the world around us. the reason behind this was to portray the worlds around. To me it is definitely an art. Creativity is indeed the most important part of photography
