Lata Mangeshkar- born September 28, 1929. She is one of the best-known playback singers in the Hindi film industry. Mangeshkar s career started in 1942 and has spanned over six and a half decades. She sang in over 980 Bollywood movies and has sung songs in over twenty regional Indian languages, but primarily in Hindi. She is the elder sister of the equally accomplished singer Asha Bhosle and lesser-known singers, brother Hridayanath Mangeshkar and sisters Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar. Lata is the second vocalist ever to have received the Bharat Ratna, India s highest civilian honour. Mangeshkar was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world. The claim was that she has recorded no less than 25,000 solo, duet, and chorus-backed songs in 20 Indian languages between 1948 to 1974 30,000 songs between 1948 and 1987, according to 1987 edition . Over the years, while several sources have supported this claim, others have raised concerns over its veracity, claiming that this number was highly exaggerated and that Mangeshkar s sister, Asha Bhosle, had more song recordings than she had.

I would like to name few of my favourite playback singers...Sonu Nigam is a highly acclaimed Indian playback singer whose songs have been featured in numerous Bollywood and Kannada movies. He has also released numerous Indi-pop albums and acted in a few Hindi feature films. Shreya Ghoshal is an Indian playback singer. She performed several songs in Bollywood, regional films and also for Indian soaps like Kasturi. Besides Hindi, she has also sung songs in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. Alka Yagnik is classically trained and is the most popular, as well as one of the leading playback singers in Bollywood since the late 1980 s. Alka began singing bhajans for Calcutta Radio at the age of six. Her first song was for the film Payal Ki Jhankaar in 1979 , followed by Laawaris 1981 with the song Mere Angene Mein, and Hamari Bahu Alka 1982 . She got her big break with the song Ek Do Teen from the film Tezaab 1988 . The song turned her into a star overnight and went on to become a pop hit. She also received her first Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for the song. All through the 1980s Alka kept singing in films, yet hits eluded her. It was in 1988 that she got her breakthrough with the song that was to become a Bollywood classic Ek Do Teen Char. Additionally, she has sung in many languages other than Hindi, including Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. She has been the number one choice for film songs, due to the versatility of her voice, in which more film heroines have requested her voice be dubbed over their performance. There is no major composer she has not sung for, and she ultimately remains favorite of many composers, such as Anu Malik, Nadeem-Shravan, and Jatin-Lait, to name a few. She is the first choice singer for any song, as a result of her popularity and her fresh, youthful vocals. In 1977, Hariharan bagged the top prize in the All-India Sur Singaar competition and was promptly signed on by the late music director Jaidev to sing for the Hindi film Gaman. His debut song Ajeeb Saaneha Mujh Par Guzar Gaya Yaaron in that movie became such a hit that it won Hariharan an Uttar Pradesh state award, as well as a Best Singer National Award nomination, and Hariharan s playback singing career took off.

Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh was a singer and actress in Bollwood films, and was popularly known as Suraiya in the film industry. She became a superstar in the 1940s and 50s during the time when actors sang their own songs. Naushad for the first time had heard her voice on the All India Radio where she sang for a children s programme at the insistence of friend Raj Kapoor and neighbour Madan Mohan. Her singing career soon found a mentor in music maestro Naushad. Suraiya had an edge over her contemporaries Kamini Kaushal and Nargis because she could sing her own songs. Suraiya remained unmarried all her life. Suraiya , the lovely melody queen created aura with her popular numbers like tu mera chaand, main teri chandani , dil-e-nadan, tujhe hua kya hai and woh paas rahe ya door rahe . She was effectively launched as a singing star in Bombay Talkies Humaari Baat 1943 .
