The quality of music composition in recent Bollywood films have been quite good. The Bollywood industry has got some very talented music composers like AR Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Pritam Chakraborty, Vishal-Shekhar, Salim-Suleman, etc. and they have done a great job in the recent years. However, there are complains about some music composers practising plagiarism. Do you agree with these complaints? Do you think that what is being called as plagiarism is actually an influenced version of a classic music composition?

There is nothing wrong to be influenced by a particular genre or by a particular composer. However it is completely unethical to lift somebody else s tunes and present it as an original composition. There have been a number of artists who have been influenced by different genres of music, including Rabindranath Tagore. But he had always given his influences a new dimension when he composed Rabindrasangeet. However, i would be utterly wrong on my part to compare anybody to the great maestro. but at the end of the day, creativity and originality have their own significance. and this is one of the reasons why music composers like AR Rahman or Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are better admired than Anu Malik or those who have indulged in palgiarism.
Why blame young generation at all ..I think there are worse heartbreakers - Shankar Jaikishen, R.D. Burman, S.D. Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Laxmikant Pyarelal and so on. They never got tagged as lifters but lifted some of the biggest hits in the Indian film industry.

We all love to make fun of Bappi Lahiri, Anu Malik, and other contemporary Bollywood music directors for shameless plagiarism. But it turns out that they are only following in the footsteps of other illustrious composers like R.D. BURMAN. Mila gaya humko saathi resembled ABBA s Mama Mia . ab tak hai jaan, jaane jahaan . Copied from the prelude of Jomeh by the Iranian singer Googoosh. Or listen to Mamunia by Paul McCartney and the Wings, and then listen to O Maria from Saagar. This is not to say that all Bollywood composers have just been copycats, lifting foreign songs in every instance. All these greats have also composed several outstanding original tunes over the years. But then, the same could possibly be said of Anu Malik. So when all the greats from OP Nayyar to RD Burman plagiarized dozens of songs, it seems a bit disingenuous to heap scorn on poor Anu Malik. In fact, one could argue that the success and adulation RD Burman and the likes received despite their plagiarism, actually paved the way for others to do the same. C

Well, friends, I believe creativity has no boundaries and the word influence or inspiration and plagiarism is greatly different..If a person humms a music all day long and composes a song that has similar music, we should not call it copied. If the song has same lyrics with same music and even same instruments used, only then it is copied...this is the basic reason why painters are not said to practice plagiarism. If I watch a painting a paint an exact replica of it, even then my strokes and curves will be different. Unless a copy is photocopied, it cannot be called plagiarized. I think we are making the word plagiarism easily usable, which should not be done without knowing the exact rules and conditions of plagiarism . The traditional music scenario in Bollywood was different and today it is in a different platform, why go for such comparisons and not enjoy the contemporary advancement of performing arts. Whatever the artistes do, they do it with effort and we should always encourage that and not criticize....
