Many years back, Doordarshan used to telecast a serial titled Neem Ka Ped with Pankaj Kapoor in the lead role. There is also a novel with the same title. Can anyone add some more information regarding the storyline?
Neem Ka Ped that is, A Neem Tree vividly depicts the social tension between the landed aristocracy and their serfs. Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza, authored this script and was a famous Urdu shayar. He also won the Filmfare Best Dialogue Award for the hit film Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki in 1979. He also wrote in Hindustani and Hindi language. He was also an eminent lyricist of Bollywood. Some of his stories and literary works also depict the social tension among the social groups belonging to same religious faith but traditionally positioned at different social hierarchical levels.

Hi Priyadarshini, you have surely provided nice information about the author of the book. It would be very nice on your part if you can put some light on the storyline as I could hardly remember it. I can just recall that it was regarding a Neem tree of a village and the character of Pankaj Kapoor was very attached to it.
Rituporna, as far as I remember it was story of a semi-bonded labourer, Budhai Ram - played by Pankaj Kapoor, under a Muslim village zamindar. The ups and downs of his life was the primary storyline of this serial.

hi rituparna.. i even watched it.. well trying to portray here the storyline The story line is tremendous, with relevant and engaging sub plots. It s a story of a semi-bonded labourer, Budhai Ram - played by Pankaj Kapoor, under a Muslim village zamindar. This Muslim landlord is under property dispute with his minister brother-in-law. As circumstances turn out to be, Budhai Ram gets caught between this fight of pride and property. The bone of contention is also the small piece of land on which he has planted a Neem tree as a kid. His only hopes are his son Sukhai whom he wants to educate and that Neem tree with which he identifies himself, and his beliefs. How a powerless, but determined peasant gets out from this wrangle, saves his Neem Ka Ped against all odds, gets his son educated and turns the tables on his warring landlords.

A classic serial. Unfortunately the Director of the serial Mr. Gurbir Singh Grewal is in a bad shape so much so that he lost his house. To see an honest man in this condition was painful. Still bearing a smile on his face he refused to name the people who cheated him of big money. Truly only such a man could have directed this kind of serial. Incidentally Doordarshan too blacklisted him for raising his voice against the prevailing corruption there. Cheers Mera Bharat Mahan

Hi Rituparna, Neem ka Ped was a classic directed by Mr. Gurubir Singh a not very famous personality but a very talented Director who could have created many more in Indian Television if not had become a victim to the corrupt system. It was a story written by Late Rahi Masoom Raza. It was a novel commenting on the caste system of pre and post Independence era, wherein Budhai Ram the lead in the serial played by Mr. Pankaj Kapoor was a peasant with a Muslim Zamindar, who lives on a small piece of land outside the village . He plants a Neem tree infront of his house on the birth of his son Sukhai Ram. He attached to both Sukhai Ram and the Neem tree equally and doesn t wants to loose any one of them but circumstances enables him to get away from bothh of them, Time changes and Sukhai Ram becomes an M.P from the same constituency and the Zamindar calls back Budhai Ram to get favours from his Son and gifts him the piece of land with the Neem ka Ped on it.
