Anju Bobby George is the next Indian athelete who I think can carry the glory forward for the country.Anju Bobby George made history when she won the bronze medal in Long Jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. With this achievement, she became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Championships in Athletics clearing 6.70 m. She went on to win the silver medal at the IAAF World Athletics Final in 2005, a performance she considers her best. P. T. Usha was born in the village of Payyoli, Kozhikode District, Kerala. In 1976 the Kerala State Government started a Sports School for women, and Usha was chosen to represent her district. She was nicknamed Payyoli Express. In 1979 she participated in the National School Games, where she was noticed by O. M. Nambiar, who coached her throughout her career. Her debut in the 1980 Moscow Olympics proved lacklustre. In the 1982 New Delhi Asiad, she got silver medal in the 100 m and the 200 m, but at the Asian Track and Field Championship in Kuwait a year later, Usha took gold in the 400 m with a new Asian record. Between 1983-89, Usha garnered 13 golds at ATF meets. She finished first in the semi-finals of the 400 metres hurdles in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, but faltered in the finals. In almost a repeat of Milkha Singh s 1960 feat, there was a nail-biting photo finish for the third place. Usha lost the bronze by 1/100th of a second. She became the first Indian woman and the fifth Indian to reach the final of an Olympic event by winning her 400 m hurdles Semi-final. In the 10th Asian Games held at Seoul in 1986, P. T. Usha won 4 gold and 1 silver medal in the track and field events. Here she created new Asian Games records in all the events she participated. She won five golds at the 6th Asian Track and Field Championship at Jakarta in 1985. Her six medals at the same meet is a record for a single athlete in a single international meet. Usha has won 101 international medals so far. She is employed as an officer in the Southern Railways. In 1985, she was conferred the Padma Shri and the Arjuna award. During the 1985 Asian Track & Field Meet at Jakarta, Indonesia, Usha secured 5 gold medals in the 100, 200, and 400 meter sprints, the 400 meter hurdles, and the 4 x 400 meter relay. She also earned a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay. This is the current record for most gold medals earned by a female in a single track meet.

P.T. Usha was one of the best athletes in the history of Indian Athletics. She is rightly named as the Queen of Indian Track and Field, as she has achieved huge success in both national and international athletics meets. She participated in the Moscow Olympics in 1980 and showed a good performance and she also won 4 Gold Medals in the Karachi Invitational Meet in the same year. She ruled the track and filed events for a long period of almost 20 years and won many gold medals in the championships like Asian Games, World Junior Meet, World Railway meet, etc. She also won silver and bronze medals in several athletics championships during 1980s and 1990s. She made a World record in the 1985 Asian Track & Field Meet at Jakarta, Indonesia. She won 5 gold medals in the 100, 200, and 400 meter sprints, the 400 meter hurdles, and the 4 x 400 meter relay in that championship and this is still the World Record for most Gold Medals earned by a female in a single meet. This is really something that the Indians can feel proud of. However, I beg to differ with Rituporna about the next athlete to take forward the glory of Usha. I don t think that Anju Bobby George can become the next P.T. Usha. Anju Bobby George has already reached an age when the fitness level of most athletes decreases and she is also suffering from injuries for the past few years. It was her injury that did not allow her to perform well in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. So, I think Anju Bobby George is probably not the right person to take forward the glory of Usha.

You are right Rituporna, I too feel the same. Anju s journey to success from rank 61 in 2001 to rank 6 in 2003 within a short span of two years, was one of sheer hard work and intensive planning. The credit for her success goes to her husband and coach Robert Bobby George who according to her was the biggest influence who helped her in realising her potential and achieving the goal.

It may be Anju has not become as successful as PT Usha. But, we do not have any other name at this point of time to replace her who have so much of talent to claim. I would like to know from others if there is any other Indian athlete, whom probably I don not know. It will be great if some one can come out with other names.
