Parachute journalism was once upon time spread throughout to bully the upcoming journalists and often lead to many mis happenings to the reporters. However, I think one advantage of this type of journalism is that the parachuter is an outsider who can look at the news event from a fresh perspective and notice things or provide an angle to the story that a stringer may have missed. Do u agree with me?

Hi Priyadarshini, Parachute Journalism is actually is the practice of thrusting journalists into an area to report on a story in which the reporter has little knowledge or experience. So, in such a case, the person reporting has little knoweldge of the concerned area and moreover, the reporter works under tight guidelines. This may result in reporting half truth or say deteriorated truth as the person has less understanding of the issue. However, in some exceptional cases, it may happen that the reporter is very competent and can grab any new issue instantly. In that case, may be we can expect a very good news coverage out of that. The person may offer another a fresh perspective but this is just a small part of it. If the journalist is not having grab over the issue, he or she cannot do justice with the investigation.

Hi ritu, thank you for the detail answer. Could you tell me whether parachute journalism can be also..

Hi Babulal, Parachute Journalism is totally different from Tellow Journalism. Yellow journalism is offering news with complete exaggeration to attract the viewers or readers. Yellow Journalism downplays legitimate news in favour of eye-catching headlines that sell more newspapers, which is done willingly. But in case of Parachute Journalism, the journalist does not report some wrong or exaggerated news willingly. If such news items come out then it is only due to his lack of expertise in the particular beat of news. Yellow journalism is unprofessional practice by news media organisations or journalists that is completey against ethics of journalism. Yellow Journalism can also over-dramatize the events.

The Prachute journalist often lacks in-depth knowledge of the situation and is usually disoriented. However, i feel that there is one good point about this .. One advantage of this type of journalism is that the parachuter is an outsider who can look at the news event from a fresh perspective and notice things or provide an angle to the story that a stringer may have missed. He or she is more likely to be able to pinpoint what a global audience will be interested in.

Hi Mr Patnaik, Your point that the parachuter is an outsider who can look at the news event from a fresh perspective is partially correct. In case of providing important news, any media house cannot take the chance like this. The chance of a parachute journalist reporting with a different perspective is not very high and here the media organisation has to take risk at the cost of providing a full fledged and investigative news. Whereas, a stringer or say the correspondent could have given better treatment to the subject matter. It is possible only when the subject matter to be reported is not very important so that the newspaper or channel does not bear any loss even if some broad coverage is not possible on the issue.

Parachute Journalism is where intense media competition and round-the-clock deadlines have made for some disturbingly predictable and often distorted accounts of places and the people who happens to live there. Some describe parachute journalism as those kinds of news that may not be that much important and is reported by the then out-of-town reporters. Parachute Journalism in other sense means dropping into a story you know nothing about and trying to make sense of the players, especially when the people is not interested to talk. It is typically an old media recipe for disaster and increasingly became popular in the age of Blogosphere, where the subjects of the story can easily rip holes in the story s narrative.
