Why People treat cats as a bad sign? Is it bad luck when a black cat crosses in front of you? Is it a blind belief ya really have some mythological value. Is there any mention in Puranas regarding this bad omen?
Cats are sneaky, clever, agile hunters with a strong streak of independence- more reasons to add them into legend and wives tales. There are a lot of superstitions centred around cats, some colour specific, some not, and some even contradict each other. I do not think that the mention of these superstitions are there in the Indian Puranas. The actual origins of the black cat crossing your path superstition is a bit of a mystery, but there are a few ideas. Cat s ability to move silently and practically undetected put some people on edge, and their association with religion added to the uneasiness in some Indian cultures. From here it was said that cats- and black cats in particular- acted as familiars to witches, creatures that are imbibed with an evil.

Cats certainly are unique creatures. They can be soft, fuzzy and pleasant, and they can be bristling, spitting balls of razor sharp teeth and claws. Seeing a black cat is considered by many to be an omen of doom not only is it bad luck, it is VERY bad luck. From there the superstition goes as far as belief that the black cat is a demon in disguise trying to cut off a person s access to heaven. The actual origins of the black cat crossing your path superstition is a bit of a mystery, but there are a few ideas. Cat s ability to move silently and practically undetected put some people on edge, and their association with Egyptian religion added to the uneasiness in some Christian cultures. From here it was said that cats- and black cats in particular- acted as familiars to witches, creatures that are imbibed with an evil, otherworldly sentience that give power to their master. What God fearing Christian who believed in witches wouldn t fear them. The black cat is commonly a small domestic feline with fur that is uniformly or mostly black. Not any particular breed of cat, they have been historically referred to as symbols of bad luck and portents of doom, destruction and generally not very nice things. In much of the world the black cat is considered unlucky. This superstition is carried on from very ancient times. The most common belief is that if a black cat crosses your intended path, then bad luck will befall you. To reverse the curse of a black cat crossing your path, first walk in a circle, then go backward across the spot where it happened and count to 13, chanting a charm or line from the Bible. However, black cats have many associations with good luck as well. It is said if you dream of a black cat, then you will have good luck and in some cultures brides were given black cats as mascots on their wedding day. In Scotland, if a black cat crosses your path it is meant to be a definite sign of good things to come, and likewise if a strange black cat stops on your porch it will bring prosperity to the household. The tail of a black cat was believed to cure a stye if it was stroked over the afflicted eye and perhaps not so lucky for the cats, a stew made from black cats would theoretically cure consumption
