At a height of 10,000 feet Tawang is not only the ideal place to escape from the maddening crowd of the cities but also the place where reunion with mother nature becomes possible. Tawang, perched at a height of over 10,000 ft, is world renowned for its 400 year old Buddhist monastery, one of the biggest in India. This place is perfect for religious as well as adventure tourism amidst unexplored scenic beauty. Tawang is also known as The Beautiful Land of Monpas , The Hidden Paradise and Land of Dawn-lit Mountains. This land evokes images of awesome mountain views, remote hamlets, quaint and sleepy villages, magical Monpas, tranquil lakes and a lot more. At Tawang, one can have a heavenly tryst with nature at its best and the heady mixture of history, religion, legends and architecture. Far away from urban trappings, comforts as well as pollution, the snow-white peaks and the flowing waterfalls, bring one closer to Mother Nature. Tawang, moored high up in the mountain ranges of the Himalayas is situated in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, in the north east of India. The area of the district is approximately 2,085 sq-kms and is well connected by Tibet in the North by the Bum La and Tulung La passes, Bhutan in the southwest and Sela ranges separate west Kameng district in the east. The name Tawang, some people say was given by Mera Lama in the 17th century. One can reach Tawang from other parts of the country via Guwahati and Tezpur in Assam. One can fly or take a train to any of these two cities from where there are regular public and private bus services to Bhalukpong in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh and from there via Bomdila and Sela Pass one can reach Tawang by road. This is a 450 km journey which will take some 16 to 20 hours. Tawang is a heaven in itself. People from all over the world come to this place to visit the monasteries that are the feature of this area. Tawang is an important centre of Buddhist learning and is particularly renowned for its 400 year old Buddhist Monastery, the biggest in India. The Monastery was founded by a monk, Mera Lama, a contemporary of the fifth Dalai Lama. Before the establishment of the Monastery, Tawang was a centre of Tantric practices. The Tawang Monastery is also known as the Galden Namgyal Lhatse . The sixth Dalai Lama was born here. The monastery is situated at a height of 3500 meters near the border. It is a place that is a veritable treasure of huge scriptures, books, gold lettered Buddhist scriptures, images and tapestries. The Parkhang Hall of the monastery has the library with the rare hand-written and block painted manuscripts of the Teaching of Lord Buddha . In addition there are 225 volumes of the explanations of Buddha s teachings covered with specially designed moth proof silk adorned with paintings. They are, indeed, rare works of Buddhist literature. The 18 feet high gilded statue of the Buddha in the monastery complex is also worth seeing. The Craft centre of the place produces fine woolen carpets in various colourful designs. There are beautiful tranquil lakes and running streams and hot water springs that reflect the colour of the blue sky in all the purity and serenity of nature. The beautiful waters of Pankang Teng Tso lake is one such place that beckons a visitor. It is a heaven for tourist only 17 KM away from the crowd of township. Other eye catching attractions are Sangetser, Banggachang, Ganga or Sela lakes or the numerous variations of scenic beauty of the snow clad silver mountain peaks and lush green meadows where thousands of species of flora and fauna prosper. All over Tawang there are numerous high water falls sometimes with clouds hovering overhead, weaving a spell of magic on the beholder. Trees of great size, plentiful climbers and abundance of cane and bamboo make Tawang evergreen. As a result, there are a number of wild life sanctuaries and national parks which fascinate the visitor. If Kashmir is the heart of the North India, then Tawang is definitely the princess of the eastern India. Any one can fall in love with this place.
