While working on an NGO project I came across a remote village in India, where Dakini Vidya form of witchcraft is widely practiced. Similar to Wicca, it involves invoking the Mother Goddess to draw spiritual strength. Does Indian philosophy offer any documentation in support of this theory? I would like to know more about this.....

hello .. thanks for this interesting post. Even though Wicca or witch craft is basically a Western thought yet I believe at one time it was a global movement. In India , witch craft in a rather structured sense is referred as Dakini Vidya. In Tantric literature, both Hindu and Buddhist talks about female adepts, initiates, disciples and other women who more or less are the secret practitioners of more or less secret tantric rituals. they are known as Dakini.

From the ninth through at least the thirteenth centuries, there was an active cult of dakini Vidya in India. In modern day it has been referred as the Yogini Vidya. At least nine yogini temples have been discovered so far. this further attests the truth that Dakini Vidya in Indian religion is age old concept. The best known yogini temples are the two in the state of Orissa, and the ones in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It is generally thought that these yogini shrines were centres for tantric practices. The greater and ultimate goal of this Dakini or Yogini Vidya was the acquisition of extraordinary abilities or supernatural powers.

hello Mr. Patnaik. Personally i am very interested in studying age old rituals of India. And occult tradition, yogini vidya or dakini vidya has always fascinated me. to answer your question, some believe that the cult had origins in the animistic traditions of Adivasi whereas some believes that the origin lies in the folk traditions of the rituals of bana devata or grama devati. It was around 7th century, those beliefs blended with the cult of Shakti and tantrism and gave rise to Dakini Vidya in a much structured way as i said in my earlier post. Dakini retains the connotation of a frightening being in Indian religion. In some Indian texts the word is often used as a synonym for sorceress, witch or even ghoul. One of her essential qualities is the ability to fly perhaps that is one of the reasons why temples dedicated to dakinis are open to the sky.

Hello Darshil sir .. could you please tel me the difference between Dakini Vidya and Yogini Vidya in..
hello Abhi, to answer your question directly, there is a distinction among the terms Yogini and Dakini so obviously there will be a distinction in the practice like yogini Vidya and Dakini Vidya. In Tantric Buddhism, the expression meaning dakini is usually used for a female deity fulfilling the role of messenger or attendant. However the term yogini is used for female yogis. She is any practitioner of tantric lore in any of its variety of kinds. But in Indian fables and folklores these dakini and yoginis are almost synonymous. In legends they are usually said to have acquired their siddhis or magical powers, such as being able to transform people into animals or birds through the mastery of some practice. As i already said in my earlier post that Dakini retains the connotation of a fierce being. In some Indian context this Dakini Vidya is almost similar to sorcery. If you have gone through my earler post you will see that there i have mentioned about one unique quality of the Dakini and that is her ability to fly.

Yes Mr. Modi it is still practiced in India. Among the Santals of Mayurbhanj district, witchcraft is still prevalent. The Santals believe that the talent for witchcraft is not innate, but is attained through strict discipline.
In India, the art of Dakini vidya has hoary traditions. Witch-hunts continue till today and it is not surprising to learn that one of Chakraverti s Ipsita Roy Chakraverti, India s first initiate into Wicca is a practicing witch planks . Its one of the oldest tradition, did not fade completely from the society.
