Since ages, through centuries the dances are indicated as a medium of worship and expression of emotions in India. So i completely agree woth your point that dance did not originate as a mere form of entertainment. But the religious significance of dance cannot be denied. Religious element always played a vital role in dancing. In ancient India, Shaivite tradition of dance originated on the belief and worship of Lord Shiva, the lord of dance. Furthermore, it is believed that Shiva s consort have performed dance in her manifestations as Kali and many other forms. Each of her dance form represents a particular bhava . Indian dances have implemented these forms and characteristics.

I believe that the dances were originally a form or movement of appeasement to the Gods which through the ages were slowly perfected and developed into an art form. May be, after this dances became an art form, they were also used as a form of entertainment.

Bharata s Natya Shastra explain the emergence of this divine art in his treatise. to quote Bharata Muni .. When the world had become steeped in greed and desire, in jealousy and anger, in pleasure and pain, Bramha, the Supreme one was asked by the people to create an amusement which could be seen and heard by all, for the Scriptures being learned and ambiguous, were not enjoyed by the masses . .. and thus the dance was created. The Indian dance is one of the oldest art that has been through a steady development for nearly two thousand years.
