I did a small search in the Internet to get the answer and I think I have found it. The first Indian film nominated to the American Academy Awards was MOTHER INDIA in 1957. Informatively, the 2nd Indian Film nominated to the American Academy Awards was SALAAM BOMBAY in 1988.
