The term Hindu mythology is used by modern day scholars. The term typically refers to the ancient Indian literature which has historically important details about ancient people, places , kings, deities and even style of living in the then India. The term myth means A TRADITIONAL STORY ACCEPTED AS HISTORY. So in academic studies, the term myth does not mean fiction or that the narrative is false. It is essentially a western epithet which ideally points out to stories of a great but UNKNOWN AGE which embodies a belief in regard to some fact or experience or phenomenon. The archaeological evidences point to the veracity of our ancient texts and therefore, Hindu mythology is essentially Hindu legends and cherished beliefs of Hinduism.

Anjana, the word myth can also mean, an unproved or false collective belief that is used to justify a social institution, a fiction or half-truth especially one that forms part of an ideology or an invented story, idea, or concept. Therefore, it s my opinion that the term myth should not be used in reference to the Hindu religion.

Hello sir.. first let me thank you for this interesting post. Yes i do agree with you that one of the definitions of myth as you have said is an unproved or false collective belief . However in academic studies while referring as HINDU MYTHOLOGY, Myth typically means the collection of traditional stories occurring in a timeless past. The great French archeologist , Paul Veyne has said that - Myth is truthful, but figuratively so. It is not historical truth mixed with lies it is a high philosophical teaching that is entirely true.... we can interpret myth as it has been popularly done as - story handed down through history.. so i do not think that the term myth when applied as Hindu mythology is a derogatory term pointing towards a fiction or half-truth of Hindu religion. The term myth then refers to a certain genre of stories. These stories are defined as tales believed as true. These tales are sacred , set in the distant past involving the extra-human, inhuman, or heroic characters and just cant be interpreted as lies . false or fiction. Perhaps this is where Myth has a striking dissimilarity with FOLKTALES, FABLES AND FICTION.

Myth is a myth. It can be his personal understanding, but cannot merge with the truth. Myth is simply an opposite to truth. And just not to prove that Hinduism has not any base, myth cannot be called as truth. you have no evidence to say myth is truth... you can also call yourself to be God, when you dont have to reason it... Hope you understand that
