In India dance always had an important ritual function in the Brahmanic period, but the more sophisticated and accomplished forms must have arisen with the subsequent developments of Hinduism as a religion. A Hindu deity, Shiva, is particularly connected to dance. Religion in India gave birth to a form of dance which has been named as Devadasi dance.. it is the mother of all dance form and it later developed other forms.

Chetan, historically and socially dance in India evolved from religious concept. Gods were then looked upon as the creators and experts in Natya. The well-known myth explains that the origin of Religious dance is the result of Brahma s meditation on the four Vedas. Natya Shastra is attributed to Bharata Muni, and it says that the Lord of the dance, Shiva taught dance to his disciple Tandu and he in turn taught dance to others on earth. Of course there is the mention of Lasya, the dance taught by Parvati to Usha, the Apsara s dance in the Devaloka. However, one cannot forget the contribution of the Devadasis and Maharis and other women dedicated to the art of Dance in the field of its existence, growth and continuation. Devadasi dance also originated in the temples

Chetan, I believe that religion is the source where the dance came from. The dance must have been created to appease the Gods. May the dance forms may have been crude in the beginning but perfected over time to what we have today.
