Hi Maniam...thanks for this post... The Banjara also called Lambadi or Lanbani are a nomadic tribe in India. They are directly linked to the romany gypsies of eastern europe. It is believed that these gypsies migrated to Europe several centuries ago. The colourful stream of the Banjaras began to travel down to the South in the 14th century. In the early 1800s, following the invasion by the armies of Aurangzeb,he Banjaras worked for the Moguls as commissariat carriers transporting provisions and arms. When the Southern campaigns ended, the Banjaras forgot their desert homes in Rajasthan and settled down in the Deccan, the plateau of central peninsular India.
Hi .....I visited Rajasthan many a times and found several instances of gypsies there. The Gypsies, called Roma, the ethnic minority who brought to the West the spark of a vibrant culture, left the Indian subcontinent about a thousand years ago embarking on a migration that scattered them all over the world. I feel that gypsies originated in the northern India and then they migrated.

Thank you for the info Roop. FYI, I did not know that the gypsies were a home grown lot. I thought that they actually migrated to India from one of the neigbouring countries.
