India has about 18,000 species of angiosperms, of which about 2,500 are considered as important sources of medicinal and aromatic chemical compounds. I would like to know about the various medicinal plants available in India and their methods of usage.....

You are right Mona, medicinal plants in India does magical benefits to the health and skin that probably many complicated medicines may not offer. I believe Tulasi is one of the most beneficial Indian medicinal plants. The fragrant leaves and flowers, in the form of tincture, tea or decoction are considered to be stomachic and expectorant, used in treating coughs, bronchitis, skin diseases, and diarrhea. The Tulsi seeds, if taken mixed in water, juice or cow s milk, are antioxidant, nourishing, mucilagenous and demulcent. They are used in treating low energy, ulcers, vomiting and diarrhea, or as an overall tonic. The powder of the dried root, taken in milk, ghee, or as a decoction, is recommended to treat malarial feve.

Mona, as an English saying goes an apple a day keeps the doctor away we can say that a Indian gooseberry a day, keeps the blood pressure in control. Also a study shows that gooseberry brings about reduction of blood cholesterol levels in both normal and hypercholesterolemic men.

Sugar Apple or Custard apple is a small tropical tree, From delicious fruits of Sitaphal, jelly, jam, conserves, sharbets, syrup, tart and fermented drinks are prepared. The peelings and pulps contain oil that is useful in flavouring. The bark and leaves contain annonaine, an alkaloid. In tropical America, a decoction of the leaves is used as a cold remedy and to clarify urine. A bark decoction is used to stop diarrhea, while the root is used in the treatment of dysentery.

There this plant which you can find in almost every Indian home. However, I do not know the name of this plant in Sanskirit or in Hindi but it is known as KARUPURAVALLI in Tamil. It is a very small plant with a lot of thick and spongy leaves. When you squeeze the leaves in you hands, you get a nice smell. The juice of the leaves are used to cure cold and chest congestion in infants.

[Moderator Comment : Hello members.. here Mr. Maniam is talking about Karupuravalli which is known as Ajapada, Indupani or Asmantuka in Sanskrit language. This medicinal plant is very useful in tackling infantile cold, cough and fever, something which has been extensively documented in Siddha literature.]
