Before I agree or disagree to your statement Chetan, I wish to say that the development which were brought to the villages have in a way destroyed the Agriculture industry in the villages. Because of this new found industries in the villages, the present generation of youngsters refuse to get involved in agriculture thus creating a shortage of foodstuff in the land. If this trend continues, India has got to spend billions in importing essential food stuff.
Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy and the villages are the life lines of growth of India. Agriculture is a very important sector for the sustained growth of the Indian economy. About 70 per cent of the rural households and 8 per cent of urban households are still principally dependent on agriculture for employment. Since some three-quarters of the population live in rural areas, a majority of households thus depend principally on this sector. Though, industrialization of the Indian economy has adversely affected the share of agriculture in the GDP, the fact cannot be ignored that India has undergone a series of successful agricultural revolutions-starting with the green revolution in wheat and rice in the 1960 s and 1970 s, the white revolution in milk to the yellow revolution in oilseeds in 1980 s. Apart from agriculture, few other avenues of income exist in rural India. Which is why drought and crop failures invariably lead to people from villages migrating to the cities in search of work. Most of them end up living on the streets, with little access to food and healthcare. One way of generating employment opportunities in rural areas is the livestock and food processing industry. The Government should come forward to support the backbone of the country through various remedial co-operative measures.
