well i feel that the origin of music lies in the ancientness of the Vedic ages. The primitive sound Om gave origin to all other sounds and music. In the vedic context the Samaveda is recognised as the mother of organized Indian music. The Veda consists of all the seven notes of the raga Karaharpriya in the descending order. The earliest Raga owes its origin to the Samaveda. The first reference to music was made by Panini in 500 BC and first reference to the musical theory was found in Rikpratisakhya in 400 BC. These reference clearly unveils that music was introduced in India much before the formal introduction of Carnatic music.

I feel that the origins of Indian classical music can be found from the oldest of scriptures. The Samaveda, one of the four Vedas, describes music at length. the hymns of Samaveda were sung in the form of Samagana. this style evolved into jatis and eventually into ragas. Indian classical music has its origins as a meditation tool for attaining self realization.
