Hi Maniam.. we cannot in one word affirm that Batik has its origin in India. Even though its exact history is uncertain, fragments of batik s projected origin dates back to the first century where it was discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs. However the history of Indian batik can be traced as far back as 2000 years. Evidence of early Batik has also been found all over the Middle East, in India, Central Asia and Africa.

The origin of Batik is by no means new. and there are controversies in regard to the origin of this art. In fact, it is believed to have originated from India and introduced into China during the Tang Dynasty 618 -905 AD. There is yet another claim that it originated from Java, in a process which the Javanese used in making their colorful batik sarongs. It reached its highest form in Java, where the craft has been a cottage industry since the 7th century. Nevertheless all these theories are yet to be proven.
The word Batik or Batique is Indonesian in origin. It is derived from the word Ambatik which means clothes with many dots. The word batik refers to the wax-resist dyeing technique used in textiles. This art is thought to be more than thousand years old. Some believe that this method of dying clothes with wax originated in ancient Egypt or Sumatra. However this technique of painting clothes are found in India, Sri Lanka, Iran and Thailand. India has a rich tradition in batik paintings and exquisite works of Batik art can be procured from different parts of India. In this technique of painting specific areas of the cloth are covered with a dye resistant substance like wax to stop them form absorbing the dyes and thereby they give shape to exquisite patterns. Since these patterns are drawn on the clothes and not weaved the artist has a greater liberty to express his creativity. Batik painted clothes are also very durable. Batik painting portrays a huge array of themes which include religious themes as well as abstract patterns. Batik paintings of Orissa,West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are especially famous.

I have also read somewhere that the traditional colours of the Indonesian Batek include indigo, dark brown, and white which represents the three major Hindu Gods Brahm , Viṣ ṇ u,and shiva , and certain patterns can only be worn by royals. How far is this true?
Yes, it is true that there were two parallel traditions in batik, one for the royalty and one for the common people. Sarongs with certain designs and patterns were strictly reserved for royalty. If anyone imitated these designs and wore them in public, they could be punished by death. These designs also identified a person s family and geographical location on the island. Particular designs, such as the butterfly, or peacock motifs are thought to bring the wearer good luck, health and prosperity. In addition the color and the motif are also part of the classification criteria. For the batik of Solo and Yogya one can identify symbolic motifs reflecting a Hindu-Javanese cultural background and the colors are most of the time the Sogan rich brown color , indigo blue , black, white and cream. These colors along with the white cloth of cotton or silk originally represented three Hindu Gods: Shiva righteousness Vishnu wisdom and Brahma strength .
