When did this custom of leaving shoes outside temples started. This is true in respect of other places of worship, like churches and mosques etc., also. Who started this and what is the purpose behind it.

One of the primary reasons why shoes are not allowed within the temples is that they are dirty and the temple being sacrosanct cannot allow the dirt from the outside world to enter its premises. moreover leather shoes are made of animal skin, which is impure. Hence these cannot be allowed inside a shrine. while Hinduism considers God the supreme, thus, everything that is associated with him is considered holy. however, i am not sure about this custom s origin...

FYI, Mr. Rajendra Prasad that from time immemorial no Hindus would have worn their footwear into any place of worship. Hindus have a lot of respect to their God and will not enter His house in a manner which is disrespectful. Informatively, Hindu scripture teaches a Hindu to enter the house of God with clean clothes, thoughts, mind , word and deed. So much so, Hindus do not even wear their shoes into their own homes simply because they have pictures or statute of their deity in the house.
