Recently we visited Gopalpur On Sea, a pristine beach in Orissa only 16 km away from the Berhampur town. It is a quiet place away from the din and bustle of the town. It has a long sandy beach to walk along. It is a lesser known place and ideal for those who wants to enjoy their solitude with the waves and breezes from the sea. A few days spent here will definitely refreshen your soul and body.
It was originally, a small fishing village on the coast of Orissa which was named when a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna was constructed in 18th century. Apart from its temple, Gopalpur was distinguished for its magnificent beach and was discovered as a perfect winter resort. The East India Company built huge warehouses and godowns because the trade with Burma had picked up and Gopalpur had become a trading point for rice from Rangoon. In those days, there were dances and parties that continued until the early hours and wealthy Bengalis from Calcutta made it their holiday home. Gopalpur was once buzzing with maritime activities which Orissa is known for ages. It was one of the outlets through which early settlers of South East Asia sailed off. It was a famous and popular seaport during the British Rule till about 1942 when it ceased to operate due to the second world war and separation from Burma now Myanmar . The crumbling walls and pillars and the light house stand witness to the past port. Remains of several bungalows and mansions belonging to the European merchants give the place a colonial look. A modern port is being developed here to revive the lost glory. Intense heat of the summer is temperated by the sea breeze in the fantastic quietness of the beach amidst palm, coconut and casuarina trees. A trip to Gopalpur-on-sea is a rewarding experience of sun and sea, fun and frolick.
