As I understand, some areas in India are designated as Restricted Areas where tourists require authorization to visit. Is it equally applicable to Indian Citizens? Which are these places?

The Foreigners Protected Areas Order 1958 states that a Protected Area Permit PAP is required for non-Indians to visit certain areas in India mainly in the North-East . Certain requirements have to be fulfilled in order to get this permit. Indian citizens, who are not resident in these areas need a Inner Line Permit ILP to enter these places. The Inner Line Permit is significantly easier to get. In addition, the Foreigners Restricted Areas Order 1968 states that a Restricted Area Permit RAP is required for non-Indians to visit certain areas in India. As of 2009, RAPs are required for all visits to the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of the state of Sikkim. Unlike PAPs, RAPs are generally available for individual travellers and can be issued by overseas embassies or even, in some cases such as Port Blair s Vir Savarkar Airport, on the spot. Indian citizens do not need special permission to visit Restricted Areas. I stand corrected on the above information.

Mr. Maniam , you are correct. I also want to add that areas near china border, also need a police permit / entry permit and is issued for a particular period. I have visited area beyond Badrinath , mana village this is last indian village near china border , beyond kathgodam in uttaranchal - enroute to ADI KAILASH, OM-PARVAT etc. some of the names are Budhi, Gunji - this is the entry point to China from Uttaranchal - a place called Lipu Pass is 9 km from here, from where we enter China for visiting KAILASH - MANSAROVAR . This permit can be obtained at our place of residence or at Delhi or before entering this area. It is better to obtain it at our place of staying - because police may ask for some documents. Indian Passport holders are exempted, but still we have to fill a form before entering and get a permission letter which we have to always carry with us during our stay in this region. Mostly Indian army and piple from INDO-TIBET POLICE force are here - and ofcourse the locals. I also stand to be corrected on this. However I have visited these places several times - and I have gone through this procedure. The places are simply wonderful and heavenly.
