Why do we ring Bells in the Temple? Is it to wake up the Lord? But the Lord never sleeps. Is it to let the Lord know that we have come? He does not need to be told, as He is all knowing. Is it a form of seeking permission to enter His precinct? It is a homecoming and therefore entry needs no permission. The Lord welcomes us at all times. Then why do we ring the bell?

In my opinion, the usage of the bells in temples are for two purposes. The Mahaghanta large bells are rung to announce to the towns and villages surrrounding the temple that the poojas for the Deity are about to commence and to hurry to the temple at once. It is also to inform the devotees who are gathered around the temple to assemble at the temple Sanctum for the prayers to begin. The smaller hand held bells are used by the priest to bring to attention of the devotees that the pooja is in progress.
