In south India virtually every temple have the gopuram. Why and what is the sanctity behind building such gopurams. I would like to know. Anybody can throw light on this subject?

I believe that the gopurams are just an entrance gateway to Hindu temples enclosures and have no other significance. Maybe, one other factor could be to show off the elloborate Indian architecture.
