While I refer to Santhals, a similar status is applicable to the Mundari, Oraon and Pahariya tribals of the Chhotanagpur belt. These indigenous peoples are truly the original inhabitants of this area. Many of the contemporary social, cultural and religious practices of the mainstream Hindu culture in the Eastern India can be traced back directly to these communities. Jharkhand state is intended to be their homeland. Yet the majority of the tribals here survive on subsistence economy, with little or no formal education, taking only the heaviest of manual labour or other marginal jobs that the mainstream would not ordinarily look at twice. Government schemes and reservations are all there, but it does little for the majority. Only a privileged few who have come into the so called mainstream avail of it for generations while the rural and marginal urban population continues to live in dire poverty. The historical exploitation of the tribals is still very much alive, albeit in modified forms. These people are still largely simple and innocent, but they do not lack intelligence. I can vouch for that out of first hand experience. I have therefore always wondered why such a state of affairs should prevail. Are there any views on this?
