Kolkata is known for its Victoria memorial, planetarium, shopping malls, etc. but what many people don t know is there are host of places around Kolkata, around 3-4 hrs ride by car, which are perfect for excursions. On e such place is the Hangseshwari Mandir in the nearby Hooghly district. Built in the 19th century, this temple defies the basic idiom of Hindu temple architecture. Another temple, the Anant Basudeva temple lies in the same complex. Its terracotta work is amazing. Has anyone been to this place?

While on a trip to Chanderngaore I had been to Hangseshwari Mandir. Indeed a different take from the usual Hindu temples with 13 minars. Each of them is shaped like a lotus bud. The style of this temple architecture is pretty different from the nagara style that was once followed in Bengal where there was only one chura or summit of the temple. The temple complex also houses the Anant Basudeva temple which displays outstanding terracotta sculpture. Standing tall in rust colour, the sculptural work is indeed a thing to behold.
