The Majuli River Island originally comprised of an area of 1250 sq.km but due to erosion and other climatic changes the island is merely left with an area of 421 sqkm. It is believed that the island will no longer exist 15-20 years later.

Majuli has been the cultural capital of the Assamese civilization since the 16th century and its main village, Naghmar. It is the nerve centre of neo-Vaishnavite culture and has been trying for the World Heritage Site status. With Majuli in Assam being declared the largest river island in the world in the Guinness World Records, the recognition will enhance its bid to get world heritage status.
