Girija Devi was one of the foundational figures of Banaras and Senia gharana. She brought thumri from the courts and kothas onto the proscenium stage. The iconic Indian classical vocalist Girija Devi passed away at the age of 88 following a cardiac arrest in Kolkata. Girija Devi made her public debut at All India Radio in Allahabad in 1949 gave her first public performance in Bihar in 1951.

Girija Devi was awarded the Padma Shree in the year 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 1989. She was also conferred with the Tansen award. The prestigious Sumitra Charat Ram Award for Lifetime Achievement for 2017 was posthumously conferred on Thumri maestro Girija Devi at the Kamani Auditorium New Delhi on November 17.
