Many shampoos use a combination of ingredients to control dandruff. Salicylic acid used in Sebulex and coal-tar used in Tegrin removes dead skin cells from the scalp and decrease the rate at which these cells are created. Zinc pyrithione used in Head and Shoulders kills pityrospora. Selenium sulfide used in Selsun Blue achieves the results of both salicylic acid and zinc pyrithione. Simply increasing usage with normal shampooing will remove flakes. However, elimination of the fungus results in dramatic improvement. Regular shampooing with an anti-fungal product can reduce recurrence.Soothing preparations may contain Sodium bicarbonate baking soda ,and coal tar based products. The most common antifungal agents used are Zinc pyrithione, Selenium sulfide and Ketoconazole. Other products used include Tea tree oil and Piroctone olamine Octopirox .

Dandruff is a common scalp condition marked by white flakes on the scalp and itching. There are many shampoos and herbal formulas available in the market which advertise dandruff control. May be. But there are other factors contributing to dandruff and itchy scalp. Do not use chemical soap or shampoos on your hair. Chemicals are harmful and may also cause allergic reactions to your scalp. There are home remedies for dandruff control. Rub the pulp of aloe vera into the scalp about an hour before bath/wash. Wash with ordinary water or use a herbal shampoo in which there is soapnut, shikakai, henna, amla. olive oil rubbed into the scalp at night and allowed overnight for up to 8 hours can supress dandruff.

Hi Suparna, here are few important tips for u. A dry itchy scalp becomes very miserable to live with and it s also embarrassing. Grandma s tips come handy while trying to get rid of acute dandruff naturally. The main causes of dandruff are impairment of general health, development of a toxic condition mainly due to taking of wrong foods, constipation, and a low vitality due to infectious diseases. Other factors contributing to this disorder are emotional tension, harsh shampoos, exposure to cold and general exhaustion. Severe dandruff can be a symptom of something a lot more serious. One of the main reasons behind dandruff is dehydration. So, first of all, you will have to realise that water is the only fluid that is going to cleanse your body and hydrate your cells. It is better to avoid those fancy sport drinks. Clean fresh spring water will do a lot more good to body than any expensive sports drink. You need to drink plenty of water all day long. It is especially important first thing in the morning. Make a habit of drinking a full glass of water while brewing your coffee or tea in the morning. The very best Dandruff Home Remedy is Olive Oil Shampoo. It will not only offer nice luster to the hair but also conditions the hair and scalp. No other hair conditioner will be required after using any Olive oil shampoo. Some shampoo has a mixture of hair conditioner in it, which is still nothing more than wax or a liquid form of plastic. Dandruff is nothing more than dry skin that is flaking off. But when you add plastic or wax on hair that is bound to flake off too. The handmade Olive Oil Shampoo may be little expensive for a bar of shampoo but it actually lasts as long as a regular bottle of shampoo. Moreover, you need to spend extra for buying conditioner. While using Olive Oil Shampoo, you should be careful if you like getting a Permanent Wave in your hair. The shampoo is great if you want to relax the curl or take the frizz out but if you like your hair very curly then use it for the first wash but use regular shampoo for the second wash. One of the most important remedies is the use of fenugreek seeds. After soaking two tablespoons of these seeds in water overnight, it should be ground into a fine paste in the morning. This paste should be applied all over the scalp and left for half an hour. The hair should then be washed thoroughly with soap-nut ritha solution or acacia concinna. Use of green gram powder is another valuable prescription for removal of dandruff. The hair should be washed twice a week with two tablespoons of this powder mixed with half a cup of curd. Beets have been found useful in dandruff. Both tops and roots should be boiled in water and this water should be massaged into the scalp with the finger tips every night. White beet is better for this purpose. The juice of snake gourd is also beneficial in the prevention and treatment of dandruff. The juice should be rubbed over the scalp for this purpose. Dandruff can be removed by massaging the hair for half an hour with curd which has been kept in the open for three days, or with a few drops of lime juice mixed with Indian gooseberry juice every night, before going to bed. Another way to get rid of dandruff is to dilute cider vinegar with an equal quantity of water and dab this on to the hair with cotton wool in-between shampooing. Cider vinegar added to the final rinsing water after shampooing also helps to disperse dandruff. Citrus fruits, bananas, dried, stewed, or tinned fruits should not be taken. After the all-fruit diet, the patient can gradually adopt a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on raw foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Short periods of an all-fruit diet for three days or so may be necessary at monthly intervals till the skin s condition improves. Meats, sugar, white flour, strong tea or coffee, condiments, pickles, refined and processed foods should all be avoided. The foremost consideration in the treatment of this disorder is to keep the hair and scalp clean so as to minimise the accumulation of dead cells. The hair should be brushed daily to improve the circulation and remove any flakiness. The most effective way to brush the hair is to bend forward from the waist with the head down towards the ground, and brush from the nape of the neck towards the top of the head. The scalp should also be thoroughly massaged everyday, using one s finger tips and working systematically over the head. This should be done just before or after brushing the hair. Like brushing, this stimulates the circulation, dislodges dirt and dandruff, and encourages hair growth. Exposure of the head to the rays of the sun is also a useful measure in the treatment of dandruff.

Dandruff is called scurf and is happened due to the excessive shedding of poisonous dead skin cells from the scalp. It is said frequent exposure to heat and cold also causes Dandruff . As it is normal for skin cells to die and flake off, a small amount of flaking is normal and in fact quite common. Some people, however, either chronically or as a result of certain triggers, experience an unusually large amount of flaking, which can also be accompanied by redness and irritation. Most cases of dandruff can be easily treated with specialized shampoos. Excessive flaking can also be a symptom of seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infection or excoriation associated with infestation of head lice. Treatment may be important for both physiological and psychological reasons. Causes: As the epidermal layer continually replaces itself, cells are pushed outward where they eventually die and flake off. In most people, these flakes of skin are too small to be visible. However, certain conditions cause cell turnover to be unusually rapid, especially in the scalp. For people with dandruff, skin cells may mature and be shed in 2 7 days, as opposed to around a month in people without dandruff. The result is that dead skin cells are shed in large, oily clumps, which appear as white or grayish patches on the scalp, skin and clothes. Dandruff has been shown to be the result of three required factors: Skin oil commonly referred to as sebum or sebaceous secretions The metabolic by-products of skin micro-organisms most specifically Malassezia yeasts Individual susceptibility Common older literature cites the fungus Malassezia furfur previously known as Pityrosporum ovale as the cause of dandruff. While this fungus is found naturally on the skin surface of both healthy people and those with dandruff, it was discovered that a scalp specific fungus, Malassezia globosa, is the responsible agent. This fungus metabolizes triglycerides present in sebum by the expression of lipase, resulting in a lipid byproduct oleic acid OA . Penetration by OA of the top layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, results in an inflammatory response in susceptible persons which disturbs homeostasis and results in erratic cleavage of stratum corneum cells. Rarely, dandruff can be a manifestation of an allergic reaction to chemicals in hair gels/sprays, hair oils, or sometimes even dandruff medications like ketoconazole. There is convincing evidence that food especially sugar and yeast , excessive perspiration, and climate have significant roles in the pathogenesis of dandruff Treatment: Shampoos use a combination of ingredients to control dandruff. Salicylic acid used in Sebulex and coal-tar used in Tegrin removes dead skin cells from the scalp and decrease the rate at which these cells are created. Zinc pyrithione used in Head & Shoulders kills pityrospora. Selenium sulfide used in Selsun Blue achieves the results of both salicylic acid and zinc pyrithione. Simply increasing usage with normal shampooing will remove flakes. However, elimination of the fungus results in dramatic improvement. Regular shampooing with an anti-fungal product can reduce recurrence. Soothing preparations may contain Sodium bicarbonate baking soda , and coal tar based products. The most common antifungal agents used are Zinc pyrithione, Selenium sulfide and Ketoconazole Other products used include Tea tree oil and Piroctone olamine Octopirox . Anti-fungal/anti-dandruff shampoos includes Head and Shoulders, and Selsun Blue containing ketoconazole have been shown to be more effective than zinc pyrithione. Although a 1981 study reported selenium sulfide as being the most effective of the tested shampoos at treating dandruff, a 1999 comparative study concluded that ketoconazole was the most effective antifungal agent. Although ketoconazole had been approved by F.D.A. in 1981, it was not approved for topical use in a shampoo until 1990, and was therefore not included in the 1981 study.

For dandruff, I would say, there are two possible and best available methods you can try and be successful too One is Home Remedies & the other is Homeopathy. If you would like to have good shiny hair without dandruff you should drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water daily, eat lots of salads, green vegetables, and fresh fruits. Also take care that you oil your hair properly which means that oil your hair neither too little nor too much brush them regularly. Try the following home remedies: 1. Mix 1 teaspoon lemon juice with 2 teaspoons vinegar and massage on the scalp. Wash your hair with an egg shampoo. 2. Take a palm full of baking soda and rub it on your wet hair. Wash it off with water. The baking soda should relieve the itching and help in reducing dandruff. 3. Grind fenugreek methi seeds soaked in water overnight. Massage this paste on scalp and hair and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Wash it off with a mild shampoo. 4. Wash your hair with warm apple cider vinegar. Then cover your head with a towel or a shower cap and leave for about 30-40 minutes. Rinse with plain water. Repeat 2 times a week until your dandruff goes away. 5. You can make homemade shampoo by mixing 100g each of amla, reetha, and shikakai, and boil these in two litres of water until the liquid reduces to half. Use this shampoo for one month twice a week. Not only will the dandruff vanish but your hair will also become thick. Alternatively, you can start with homeopathic medications but only after consultation with a qualified homeopathic physician who will take your detailed case and finalize the correct remedy for you. However, remember that homeopathy offers great benefits in case of dandruff and treatment is aimed at long term or rather life long relief of the condition. Homeopathic medicines are selected depending on the cause, considering the underlying pathology that could give rise to the dandruff and treatment is aimed to give relief to the person as a whole. Some of the homeopathic remedies that are proven to be highly effective for dandruff are: Thuja, Selenium, Natrum muriaticum, Sepia, Sulphur, Fluoric acid, Graphites, Oleander. Of course these remedies need to be prescribed only if indicated after individualizing the case according to homeopathic philosophy and principles

You can massage your hair with lemon juice. It is very effective. But yes don`t apply it directly. Mix it with oil then massage your hair and then wash your hair after half an hour.

Arjun Wagh, I have heard that applying baking soda on scalp makes the skin and hair very rough and dry. And dry scalp also results in dandruff. So will this remedy really help to reduce the dandruff problem?
